Why do my phone and my friends phones freak out so much

I have an LG cell phone on Verizon, and whenever I turn it off and then later turn it back on, it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours before it receives texts that were sent while the phone was off. What the problem?

The texts were random and obviously written by someone else. At least one of the phones uses bluetooth and online contact backup. How,pandora bracelets sale? A Virus?
