Man fatally struck by freight train in Hawthorne

According to Capt. Richard McAuliffe, Hawthorne police received a call from the NYSNW freight company reporting that they had struck someone near an overpass that leads the tracks over Wagaraw Road. When officers arrived, they found a man's body nearby.

The Hawthorne Fire Department and Passaic County Crime Unit were called in to transport the body to the state medical examiner's office, but police found no identification on the man, and have as yet been unable to gather much information on who he might have been.

According to McAuliffe, the victim is a black male in his late 50s, wearing sneakers, dark sweatpants and a dark coat with tan fur lining the collar. He is around 5 feet 8 inches tall, and weighed around 175 pounds.

Police also found a tan Adidas baseball cap and a pair of glasses nearby that they believe belonged to him.

The area of the tracks where the man was struck is close to the Paterson border, and detectives have taken a picture of him to city homeless shelters, as well as police stations and hospitals in both Passaic and Bergen counties.

Freight train traffic was undisturbed by the incident, and a lower track run by NJ Transit was also able to begin its regular service on time this morning,adidas originals js wings, McAuliffe said.
