Barry for a steel structure with stone cladding. Construction began in 1886 and went on for eight years, a long time for a rapidly expanding city.As a display of its grandeur, London would need a monument which could be described in superlatives only; it would have to be the biggest, the most beautiful and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever built. A commentator at the time described the bridge as a "celebration of British heroism on the battlefield... and of British imperialism as a whole". According to writer Peter Ackroyd, author of an elegy to his home town entitled London: The Biography (Vintage, 2001), Tower Bridge was deliberately "built upon an impersonal and somewhat forbidding scale. In its immensity and complexity, it reflected the workings of the city itself".At the turn of the 20th century, London reigned supreme in the areas of banking, insurance, raw materials and shipping.
