Other 63 people were acquitted for lack of evidence and, at the time of the verdict, all 94 had been in prison for nine years. Among those acquitted was Maulana Umarji, a local cleric and one of the main accused in the case.In May last year, all 31 accused appealed to the Gujarat High Court against the verdict of the local court in Ahmedabad.A month later, the Gujarat government appealed against the acquittal of 61 people.The Naroda Patiya Case:The train burning sparked retaliatory attacks by Hindus against Muslims across the state. On Feb. 28, 2002, an armed Hindu mob attacked Naroda, a small suburb outside Ahmedabad, which was inhabited by over 2,000 Muslims.
