Many of the passengers were Hindu activists.It’s unclear what sparked the violence, which took place as the train was near the town Godhra. Reports from the time say the violence started after some of the Hindu travelers got into a fight with a Muslim tea seller at the railway station in Godhra. The train started again from the station but soon it was stopped and set on fire by a mob of Muslims. A total of 59 Hindus were killed.The train burning case sparked a debate on whether the fire was deliberate or accidental. In February 2011, a court found 31 people guilty of setting fire to a carriage  of the train, adding weight to the claim of the state government of Chief Minister Narendra Modi that a mob of Muslims intentionally killed the passengers.Eleven of the 31 people found guilty of criminal conspiracy were given a death sentence while the rest were given life imprisonment. Other 63 people were acquitted for lack of evidence and, at the time of the verdict, all 94 had been in prison for nine years. Among those acquitted was Maulana Umarji, a local cleric and one of the main accused in the case.In May last year, all 31 accused appealed to the Gujarat High Court against the verdict of the local court in Ahmedabad.A month later, the Gujarat government appealed against the acquittal of 61 people.The Naroda Patiya Case:The train burning sparked retaliatory attacks by Hindus against Muslims across the state. On Feb. 28, 2002, an armed Hindu mob attacked Naroda, a small suburb outside Ahmedabad, which was inhabited by over 2,000 Muslims.
