I familiar with Sensus brand water meters. All of the ones we use for our city water utility have a metal body with an interchangeble "register" head. The first generation had meter readers look at the face. The second generation had a wire that connected the register to the lid, so meter readers could just touch the lid with their "mini-reader" to get a read. Third generation put an MXU (meter transmitter unit) on the "touchcouple wire" to enable "radio-reading" of meters in addition to the old touchreading and visual reading.
