Those numbers showed a worsening of the child sex ratio nationally and in most individual states.Yet the Lancet report also noted that the rate of increase in selective abortions in the most recent decade was 170%, compared to 260% in 1991 to 2001. Of course that in itself isn’t positive—anytime you have a larger base the growth rate is going to appear smaller.It’s a bit like the overall population numbers—even as they increase in absolute terms, a decrease is still taking place. In that decade it dropped precipitously from 945 girls to a 1,000 boys to 927—18 fewer girls, or a 1.9% decrease over the previous decade.From 2001 to 2011, the number went from 927 to 914 to 1,000 boys in the 0 to 6 age group, or 13 fewer girls—a 1.4% decrease.And even as the numbers of selective abortions have increased from decade to decade, it is entirely possible that they account for a shrinking share of India’s overall pregnancies and births,toms shoes.Health care advances have led to more births as well as a larger population of young people surviving to become parents themselves, which means the numbers of children born in recent decades has also boomed.The Lancet study estimated that selective abortions accounted for between 2 to 4% of the expected 13.3 to 13.7 million pregnancies in 2010.
