00,000 to 700,000 rupees (around $11 500) [from the Haryana state government] after clinching a silver medal at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games. The cash prize helped me purchase property in my village, Bhiwani, toms shoes sale, which I later sold off to build a home for my family.WSJ: In 2010 the local government demanded proof you actually won anything at the Olympics or at other sporting competitions as a condition for granting you a monetary award. Tell us about the experience.Singh: It was a harrowing experience dealing with bureaucrats. Because they have administrative power, they consider themselves to be superior to most of us, almost as if they’re kings! It was only after constant pressure from the media that I received the money.WSJ: What is the government doing to promote boxing in the country, if anything? Singh: I really don’t know what they’re doing. I still fail to understand why only cricketers are given perks like free land, and so on. Come on, we boxers aren’t that bad either: We’re smart, intelligent and decent looking too! I’m working really hard to make my country proud. I hope someday my turn comes, too.In terms of infrastructure and support, we’re in dire need of good physiotherapists and doctors for the Olympics. I have personally appealed to the government to help out on that front. Nothing’s happened so far but I’m hopeful they will take action soon.WSJ: You’ve taken up modeling on the side. How is that going? Singh: It feels good and it’s damn good fun! But in all seriousness, when I walk for a designer, I walk the ramp as Vijender Singh, the boxer. I believe that by doing so, boxing will at least,in some way, get promoted in our entertainment industry. Plus, if cricketers can, why can’t I?Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesSingh reacted after beating Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan during a boxing final at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.WSJ: There are rumors you’ll soon debut in Bollywood. Is that true, cheap toms?Singh: No immediate plans till the Olympics are on. But wait and watch. You never know what may happen!WSJ: We hear you’re a big fan of real-life boxing legends like Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali as well as Rocky Balboa, toms outlet. Singh: Oh, yes. I’m a big fan of the Rocky series. Given the chance, I’d love to meet Sylvester Stallone. But apart from boxing, I’m an ardent fan of tennis and football.Every Friday, 40 to 45 boxers get together to play a rough game of football at the Patiala training camp. In fact, we’ve been closely following the recent UEFA championship to devise tactics and strategies for our weekly matches!WSJ: What advice would you give to aspiring boxers?Singh: Don’t worry about the outcome: work hard, believe in yourself, and leave the rest to the almighty.Follow India Real Time on Twitter @indiarealtime.
