Just a couple of weeks ago most of the people I know in Manhattan or in Litchfield County where I spend my weekends were convinced that this fall’s election was between Bush and Anybody But Bush. Exactly the same type of people who were so eager for and so sure of a Democratic victory before were starting to turn in another direction. And with the steadiness of weather vanes, they now told me they really didn’t like Kerry very much, that Teresa really was going to be a big problem, and that the president wasn’t that bad after all.
